LABORATORIES & PLAYGROUNDS develops a series of digital environments populated by proto machine structures and synthetic network actors. These works construct speculative ecosystems where infrastructure, experimentation, and leisure overlap.

The title reflects a tension. The laboratory implies control, testing, and system optimization. The playground suggests improvisation, exploration, and collective presence. The environments operate between these two conditions, staging digital space as both experimental apparatus and social field.

Proto machines appear as infrastructural devices embedded in the landscape. They resemble refineries, reactors, nurseries, or cultivation systems, yet they do not perform real industrial functions. Instead, they represent processes such as extraction, regulation, and optimization that structure contemporary technological culture. Clouds are “regulated,” elements are “distilled,” systems are “maintained” as metaphors for algorithmic governance and environmental management.

Referencing garden traditions and Arcadian landscape design, the project reexamines the historical idea of nature as a curated and controlled environment. Here, the garden becomes a cybernetic construct shaped by data systems, and synthetic materials.

LABORATORIES & PLAYGROUNDS questions how technological culture reframes ecology as something to be engineered, simulated, and optimized. The environments offer neither utopia nor dystopia. They function as test sites where viewers inhabit the aesthetics of control, adaptation, and systemic balance.
